How to get an Electrical Certificate of Compliance

You get an Electrical Certificate of Compliance by booking a registered electrical contractor to inspect the fixed installation at the property. If it passes, they issue the certificate. If it does not, the faults are quoted and repaired first.

1. Use a registered contractor

Only a registered electrical contractor, registered with the Department of Employment and Labour, may issue an Electrical Certificate of Compliance. Ask for the registration. A certificate from an unregistered person is not valid, and unregistered work can leave you without a usable certificate.

2. Book the inspection at the property

The inspection is done at the house or business, not at an office. Have the address ready when you book. Tell the contractor if you are selling, if solar or an inverter was added, or if the distribution board was replaced. That changes what must be inspected.

3. What is inspected

The contractor inspects the fixed installation. That includes the distribution board, earth leakage, wiring, sockets, lights, earthing, and the connections to the geyser and stove. Plug-in appliances are not part of the certificate.

4. If it does not pass

A certificate is not issued on a failed inspection. The contractor should list the faults and quote the repairs. You approve the work. After the repairs, the installation is checked again and the certificate is issued.

You are not obliged to use the same contractor for the repairs, but the certificate can only be issued once the installation passes.

5. Keep the certificate

Keep the certificate and the test report. The conveyancer will want them for a transfer. An insurer may ask for them on a claim. If you add circuits, a distribution board, or solar later, you will need a new certificate or a supplementary certificate for that work.
